Kentucky WBB Season Recap

While the Kentucky’s men basketball seems like they are finding their normal ways after winning at Miss State and at home vs Vanderbilt. Some may forget that Women’s basketball is having a great season so far.

When the season started, I thought this team would be good, but the way they are playing with leadership of Rhyne Howard and other girls we have. This team can be a title contender with no doubts in my mind.

The Women’s team started the season with two opponents out of the Ohio Valley Conference. Those were Murray State and Belmont. First game was Murray State. We had multiple people out including Howard. This was the best game of the season for Chasity Patterson. She had 30 points and six rebounds in a 26-point win over the Racers. The next game was like the first. UK played Belmont; UK had multiple out still. This was the game that Dre’una Edwards introduced herself this season. She had 27 points and 15 rebounds in a 20-point win over the Bruins.

Through two games, it was obvious what UK’s strength would be. That would be rebounding and shooting. They struggled without Howard. No doubt in my mind, they would have won both games by more with Rhyne Howard. And now this is where the season truly starts. UK took on Kansas State in the SEC/BIG 12 Challenge.

This game was the game that showed how good their shooting could be but struggled shooting. It was a close game until the Cats pulled away in the fourth quarter. They would win this won by 11. The rebounding is super good. Rhyne Howard only had eight points in this game but not a problem.

Kentucky then took on #13 Indiana. This game showed how good Rhyne Howard could be. She scored 22 points in a 4-point win over the Hoosiers. Our three-point shooting was super good. The best shooting game of the season so far. Then we took on Marshall. I can say that this game was super fun to watch and showed that Rhyne Howard was more than a scorer. Blair Green had 17 points, while three others had 10+ points. This was another great shooting display and great rebounding display as well.

Kentucky then took on Samford. Everyone besides one person scored in this game. Probably the best game Kentucky had scoring and spreading out the points. This game displayed the passing abilities of the Cats. UK made 33 shots while 23 of them were assisted. And then the one game UK loss this season. Kentucky travelled to DePaul and lost by 4. Kentucky dominated the boards but did not shoot well. DePaul is not a bad team at all. Kentucky had four people having double digit scoring but that was not enough.

Kentucky then came back from the loss and took on Wofford. They took care of business in this game and was ready for conference play. Chasity Patterson had ten steals. Kentucky dominated in all categories and won by 61. And now it is the start of conference play for the Cats. And the first game was a test.

They played against #10 Arkansas and won by 11. Has you can probably guess. Rhyne Howard had 24 points in this game. This was a great shooting and rebounding performance over a great Razorback team. A sneaky few players to keep an eye on while the season continues is Blair Green and Robyn Benton. And finally, the game on Sunday, which was at Miss State. This game was close all the way through. UK won this game by 6 in overtime. Rhyne Howard took over this game and scored almost all her points in the second half/overtime. This game showed how important the bench can be. Foul trouble early showed that. This game had 22 points off the bench in an important battle.

The first two SEC games for the Cats were test and they prevailed through those tests. The remaining schedule is tough, but I have my faith that they can win them all. The next five games are, at #8 Texas A&M, vs #5 South Carolina, at Auburn, vs Vanderbilt, and vs Alabama. I would suggest watching them, they are playing some good basketball.
